If you’re someone who follows what the Conestoga Iconographic Studio is doing, you’ll know that we really like the colours we create here in the village. And, one of our favourite local colours is the woad blue we make every year.
Creating indigo blue from woad plants goes back into Neolithic history, and the colour is one that harkens back to a time when the culture was deeply connected to the earth. Everything created at that time had a personal connection to a place. It’s something that is still present in this colour, and also something that resonates with the studio’s work.
As we’re putting our little woad field to bed this year, we have an abundance of extra seed. And, since this is the case, we thought we’d share something we love with others who might be interested in harvesting their own blue pigment.
Right now is the best time to plant woad seeds (to let them sleep in the snow until spring), so we’d like to send these out as an inspiration to others now. Next year, we’ll look forward to hearing about what you create with this beautiful blue. In all, we have about 60 little baggies to send off, first come, first claimed. All we’re asking is that you cover the postage.

* Please make sure that you’ve got the time and are permitted to grow woad in your area. Woad is considered a noxious weed in some places because it spreads quickly and is a heavy feeder on the earth’s nitrogen. So, when growing it, it needs to be kept contained.
